Where do you begin when you are given almost nothing?

When Wau-Waria became a district in 2022, the journey did not begin with established systems, resources or infrastructure. There was no district vehicle, no operational funding and staff housing was in some cases unlivable condition. The office space and administrative systems were yet to be established.

It was in many ways, a blank cheque and a blank book. A new district, with the opportunity to write its own story. But a district is not built by buildings alone. It is built by people, institutions, leadership, commitment and community resilience.

From those difficult beginnings, the foundations of Wau-Waria began to take shape.

From almost nothing, we started.

From a blank page, we began to write.

And the journey continues.

This is Part 1 of the 10-part Governance Series, looking at the creation of Wau Waria and where the district began.

We will continue over the coming Mondays to look at Leadership, Institutions, Planning, Finance, Digital Governance, Transparency, Partnerships, Achievements and Challenges.

Wau Waria has a story to tell.

Let us understand where we started, where we are and what remains to be built to make our Wau Waria Great Again.
